I know. I know what you’re thinking…‘why on Earth is she telling me about watering cans?!’ But bear with me, this was my best purchase of quarantine and I love it an unexpected amount.
Like many of you, these months at home have meant an introduction to gardening, suddenly everyone I know is growing tomatoes. Our building has a small, previously desolate, terrace and we have transformed it (‘transformed’ might be a stretch…) into a container garden. Pots everywhere. It’s rather a mess, and my roses are refusing to grow, but I couldn’t be more glad to have a spot outside to enjoy a cup of tea and escape my desk.
Cultivating this idyll however requires a surprising amount of water, in full sun all day, our plants were parched, and refilling a water jug 147 times swiftly grew old. I bought a Haws.
Whenever possible I buy high quality British made items, I like to support our industry, especially heritage brands and Haws is exactly that. Still made to the same design that was patented by John Haws in 1886, they are perfectly balanced, making them easy to carry and easy to pour. Produced in Smethwick in the West Midlands, they are made to last a lifetime, and come in different sizes, with spout lengths and rose options depending on what you need. The indoor cans come in different colours, but I’m a traditionalist at heart and the British racing green is perfect for me! This is the best looking watering can you will be able to find, handsome and classic, and I absolutely know that I might be the only one who cares about that, but I genuinely care.
So, if like me, you’re just beginning on your gardening journey, or have gathered quite the collection of potted plants, invest in a Haws, you won’t regret it!
